AFRICAN AMERICAN TRADITIONS:
Portraits from African American History

A new book by one of the most influential scholars of our time and the leading proponent of the Afrocentric Movement and Theory

PROFESSOR MOLEFI KETE ASANTE
In association with

DR. WILLIAM SPIVEY

Africans have never ceased to add color, vigor, creativity, and ritual to American life.  In African American Traditions, Molefi Asante and William Spivey celebrate the reservoir of wisdom, knowledge, science, and art in the African American people.  The book presents some of the most classical aspects of the culture of Black America. The people created Ebonics as a language with which poets such as the elegant Paul Laurence Dunbar, Langston Hughes, and Arna Bontemps told stories in fashions that were precursors to the raging Hip Hop artists of today.

Musical giants such as Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Stevie Wonder, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, John Coltrane, Count Basie, James Brown, and Michael Jackson are featured. Few communities in the world have produced as many prolific artists as the African American people. Haki Madhubuti, Mari Evans, Amiri Baraka, Sonia Sanchez, Ralph Ellison, Toni Morrison, and Alice Walker are deeply etched into the rock of American life.

Charles Bolden has served as the leader of NASA longer than any other director. James West invented the electret microphone in cameras and phones.  Entrepreneurs and corporate tycoons in this community have always used their skills and knowledge to make something out of nothing. During the 20th century and later, African Americans led corporations and entered the world of managerial wealth to a greater degree. Asante and Spivey highlight some of these individuals in the book.
